Battalion Chief – Ryan Fox
Battalion Chief, Ryan Fox, has been a part of The Campbell County Fire Department since 1993, starting out as a cadet. In 1997 he became a seasonal firefighter and in 2002 joined the Department as a full-time firefighter. He says that becoming a firefighter was a childhood dream of his citing a family history of serving as volunteers. Ryan has worked hard to climb through the ranks at CCFD and is now a Battalion Chief.
Ryan says he has been fortunate to spend his career with The CCFD, “they have been very supportive with my career development and allowed me to manage several large scale projects. I have learned valuable skills at each position.” The CCFD is unique in the fire service and offers diverse opportunities, due to the size and location of the county. Full-time firefighters with The CCFD have to be a “jack of all trades.” They must be proficient in EMS, Rescue, Wildland, Haz-Mat, Structural and Industrial fire operations.
When asked what advice he would give to someone interested in a firefighting career he shared that, “Formal education is the future of the fire service, stay out of trouble with the law, be a team player and try out seasonal work first to see if you like it.” Ryan says that, “Education, training, and experience are the three pillars of a well-rounded firefighter. With every promotion in the fire service, the administrative requirements increase as well as the need to solve complex issues. Fire officers need to be able to operate successfully in two very distinct environments, the emergency scene and the administrative arena. The emergency scene is often chaotic with limited information, high risk decisions with severe consequences. The administrative role is the exact opposite, comfortable environment, plenty of time, and the decisions do not have the same consequences.”
In his down time Ryan enjoys spending time with his family and reading books on military history.
